If you haven't seen the Wingham Oase RVs yet, you are in for a treat. I totally fell in love when I started watching videos on YouTube of these adorable, compact and luxury Italian RVs. Wingham RV has been popular in Europe for decades. In fact, wingham has been in business for 45 years And the exciting part of all this is they are finally coming to the United States. The Wingham Oase 540 will be the first one you'll see on roads here in the US, and shortly after that we'll see the 610 enter the market. So what exactly are these Wingham RVs and why are they so popular? That's what we're answering on this episode of the Wayward Home podcast. I interviewed Tony Diamond. He's the founder, director and CEO of W Motorhome Sales North America. Tony is spearheading the effort to bring these Wingham RVs across the pond and here to the US. Let's go. Hey, there I'm Kristen Haynes with thewaywardhomecom and I spend half the year in my camper van and half on my sailboat in Mexico. I hope to help you achieve your nomadic living dreams. So an Italian-made RV is finally coming to US soil, and it's called the Wingham. Two models of the Wingham in particular the Oase 540 and the Oase 610, will be first to come here to the United States. These little RVs have pretty much set YouTube on fire. Both of them have amassed over 6 million views way more than any other class B RV. So Americans are a little bit in love with these gorgeous little RVs. Tony Diamond is founder, director and CEO of W Motorhome Sales North America and is bringing these RVs to the United States. He joined me today on the Wayward Home Podcast. All right, tony, i'm so excited you're on the Wayward Home Podcast. Thank you so much for coming on today to talk about Wingham RVs.
Speaker 2:Of course It is a pleasure to be here. I'm very excited to stay with you.
Speaker 1:First of all, for people who have never heard of a Wingham if you could just describe these RVs where they come from, what they look like, because they are so cool and I can't wait to tour one myself but just tell us all about these.
Speaker 2:Absolutely. Wingham is a family home company that's based in Verona, italy. They currently sell in 15 countries throughout Europe, asia and Australia. They're now coming to the US. Their special sauce is they make ultra-compact luxury RVs. They have five different Flax B models and they have two different Frable Trailer models. I'm sure we'll get into more of the details in a bit, but that's a high-level bit of power.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and these are really compact RVs. From what I've seen from all the videos that are on YouTube and all over the place, they're tiny. I mean, the Wingham OASI 540 is just shy of 18 feet, correct.
Speaker 2:That's right. It's 17 feet nine inches long. The way they're able to accomplish such small footprints time have these fully-featured motorhomes inside is they do something that, to the best of my knowledge, no other motorhome company in America does, which is all American-class motorhomes are really built this in. They take an Amazon delivery right. They take an existing cargo van, whether it be a Ford Transit, a Ram ProMaster or a Rissetti Sprinter, and they build the best motorhome they can inside that existing shell. So what we will do and it's different than everybody else is they take a Chaston cab, albert Blast Monocoque's shell and they attach it to the back of that Chaston. That innovation allows them to build these ultra-compact motorhomes, but yet they're fully-featured inside.
Speaker 1:Right, and one cool component is that shell that they use and that has a lot of benefits. Rather than just having all these different parts and pieces, what are some of the benefits of just building using this one shell that's put onto a chassis?
Speaker 2:So, by creating custom Albert Blast Monocoque shell that allows Wingham to put their bed. Unlike all other classroom motorhomes, whose bed takes up a lot of floor plan spheres, wingham's bed, which is a patented drop-down bed, is recessed in the ceiling, so when you don't want to use it, it's not taking up any floor plan spheres. When you do want to use it, you just put your hand up and pull the bed down. And so this innovation its patented drop-down bed brings up all of the floor plan spheres, which allows Wingham to build a much larger kitchen. The kitchen is, in my opinion, it's like the experience of a studio apartment, a dining room that is like a bake-in-seating that seats five. So in a 17-foot-9-inch-tomorrow there is a dining room that seats five. The bathroom is like the experience of a boutique hotel bathroom. So you have these amenities that you normally expect to get in a 30-foot-loader home, but in this 17-foot-9-inch-floor home, because you're not having to use up any of the floor plan spheres, none of the floor plan spheres is allocated to the bed. So that's the first main innovation that the Monocoque shell allows for. The next is so it's fiberglass, and, as I'm sure you know, fiberglass does not conduct heat. So all the classroom owner homes builds in America, whether it's Winnebay or Thor in Airstream, and again they're all inside these steel argos, right, mercedes-benz breakers. So it still conducts heat. Fiberglass does not conduct heat. So when it's hot outside, your Wingham is not going to sort of print to just like oven, like all the other motor homes will, and so you're going to end up using a lot less power to keep yourself comfortable on a hot day. But then also because it is this one-piece shell, it's a Monocoque shell, so there's no seams. So on a hot day when you're cranking your air conditioning, that cold air is not going to seep out like it would in all other motor homes that have the seams, and on an old day your petas are going to seep out, so you can use a lot less power to keep yourself comfortable. And then the other sort of aspect to cold power and temperature control is because of this Monocoque shell which, if you look at the malls, it sort of fans out on the sides by about 10 inches. So that extra space on the sides allows Wingham to install a much thicker, much denser insulation. So that insulation is going to do two things. One is it's going to be a lot more effective with temperature control and using less battery, but also sound at it. So you have this really dense, thick insulation. So you're sleeping at night, you're in a year or a lot less cold from the outside, and when you're driving it's a much more pleasant experience.
Speaker 1:Wow, so many interesting benefits And I know, i know it Well it's so cool and unique and different for the US market, which is probably, you know, one of the reasons why people are kind of going crazy over these. I know we've spoken before about the millions of YouTube videos and views that the windmills have gotten. Why do you think they've captivated Americans so much?
Speaker 2:Well, i think that there's certainly a big shift in the US towards wanting smaller or more compact ones, whether that be because people want to use these more day to day. They want to park them easily in their driveway or just use them to take, you know, the kids of the family out to the day, to the soccer game and then the grocery store. These are very nimble and easy to maneuver and easy to park. Certainly, gas prices smaller is is better, but with wind in particular, you know, i think we will look at the actual motorhome. It looks. so I think it looks beautiful. Right, there's something that that costume shell on the back of the Chasse and can does that just gives it this very kind of kind of handsome look. And you know, at the end of the day, i mean, who doesn't want to drive something around looks beautiful, and so I think that's something that Wingham offers, that at an exterior aesthetic that you don't get when you're driving. You know the air streams and the lowers in the winter, bagels.
Speaker 1:Yeah, very true. And so for you personally, when did you first see this RV and when did you start thinking like I want to, you know, participate in bringing these to the state?
Speaker 2:Yes, yes, so that's a little bit of a long-winded answer. I hope you have time for the story. So my partner and I, prior to getting involved with Wingham, we had this brick and mortar hospitality company that was sort of like a hybrid between a corporate apartment company and a boutique hotel company And we would go in and we would convert these buildings to these very high end furnished, fully furnished rental buildings. But we really went above and beyond. So our wallpaper was like hand-painted and we brought in this artist who was also an interior designer. Literally all of our furniture was custom built, the fabric's for hand selected. So this was sort of our sensibility, was this sort of bespoke luxury experience with our brick and mortar hospitality company. And so we were opening up locations around California where we had this idea wouldn't it be cool to incorporate these pack motor homes where our guests in our brick and mortar locations could, you know, stay in Los Angeles for a month or two, then hop in a the company's called Stay Tone, hop in a Stay Tone compact class to load our home and go to our San Francisco location and, you know, take a week in between and like, have this amazing experience going up the coast And going to the beaches and you know the wider areas and stuff. So we had this idea that we were novices at the time and we just thought to ourselves like well, we've been, you know, our whole lives, we've heard about when a big go and Thor and Eric are streaming, they must make these amazing, compact, luxurious motor homes. They didn't. Why would we have heard of them or you know why would everybody be on them. And so we started going into our V-shells and, like having the like, you know the like the oxygens sucked out of you, we started going inside these motor homes And, you know, again we were looking for something that would be like on brand for these luxury apartments. And we go inside and the cabins look like they came from home to you And I say this respectfully, but like it's true They were. They were all kind of like I call them just like, look like brown, like everything was just brown inside, like this brown interior, like the pressing, you know, and everything. Just the back rooms were, you know, they felt like airplane back. They weren't luxurious. The kitchens were like these tiny little utility kitchen, and so we didn't see how, if we took those motor homes and put them with our brick and mortar concept that there would be like this, like because they didn't offer the same luxury experience. So we were about to give up. And then, one at like two in the morning, i'm on YouTube just like searching for, you know, clasping motorhomes into my scene Opps to this video of the wing of moe c5 morning and I'll never forget like the first time I saw it I was like I thought I was like scratching my life. My mother was like is this a rendering of a motorhome? It's like coming in the future, or is this something that is like like real, that's settled right now? And I quickly realized, obviously, when I googled wing and I was like, oh my god, this is like a company that's like making these like huge touristic with motorhomes. So the next morning I call my partner. I was like, like you know, we're going, it'll play. And so within I think a week or two, we were in Whittingham's. We see, yo, her name is Lorena Torre. Are her office? We're like oh my god, we got to get these two America. They're amazing and That was sort of the. that was sort of the beginning of the year very Cool.
Speaker 1:That's exciting that they've taken this on to bring these to the states, and I'm wondering, like what is this process like? is this fairly challenging to import a vehicle from another country, or what is this been like for you guys so far?
Speaker 2:You know I would say, for so it has been. It has been extremely challenging. Really, that challenge is front-ended. Like like all the gray hair you see, that was like 18 months ago like thankfully there hasn't any gray hair like the last six months or year, but That shout was figuring out how to make Wingham's which are legal in Europe, asia, in Australia, how to make them US compliant. And when we first met with wingham they're like look, you're not the first entrepreneurs come to our office. We've been getting calls from dealers for years like begging us to bring us to the US. We get emails every day and from from people in America finding out about us and saying how can I get a wingham? But the issue was they're a family over company. Actually, i think they're the only family over company left Motor home manufacturer in Europe. They've all been gobbled up by, you know, the Heimers of the world And so you know they've had a very successful business in Europe and Asian, australia and to to at the time That the only way that they knew how to make European Vehicles legal in the US was to run them through crash tests, and they have five different models To run each model, the processing. It's about a million dollars and start to think so They're looking at like a five million dollar bill to make these living on the US and you know That's just a lot of money. They were doing very well Europe and in Asia and Australia. They just, you know, they just didn't sort of like with that, with that, with that cost. They just weren't that motivated, despite the demand. And then when we got involved, we brought in some engineers And we actually figured out that there was a very cost-effective way to do this, which was to swap out the fiat to Cotto chassis or RAM Pro Master chassis, because, as you know, fiat and ram are both made in by Stalantis, so The chassis are nearly identical. So by swapping the two out It's a very cost-effective way to make these new, everything, these us. And so that I was really like I said, the The front, the front loaded part things. This the very stressful part, because, you know, my partner and I saw the potential. Well, we knew that the we were budget constrained and we just kept our fingers crossed. Some engineer, we figure out how we could pull this off and they didn't sell. It's very sad.
Speaker 1:That's amazing. So the whole process of someone getting one of these in the States is, i think these the Pro Master chassis is being built in Mexico, right, and then it's shipped to Italy and then it shipped back. Is that kind of what we're looking at?
Speaker 2:Yeah, so it. Stalantis has a plane Mexico, the chassis made of Mexico. Then there were run through the fleet Dealer of a which he who's in in Massachusetts, and then from there they get shipped to Williams factory drawing.
Speaker 1:Very cool And so like how does somebody go about ordering one of these? are they available to order? Did they put like a down payment or what's the process right now?
Speaker 2:Yes, so we've been accepting reservations and until we I start delivering them, all we can do right now was just take reservations, which is a thousand dollar fully refundable reservation fee, with expected delivery date to begin late sound.
Speaker 1:Very cool, so people can go on and keep preserving these, and you've had a lot of reservations, right.
Speaker 2:Yes, thank you to all of our customers out there. We greatly appreciate it. We're doing great. We have 200 reservations so far, which we couldn't be more thrilled about.
Speaker 1:Very cool And a couple of questions I've heard from people is, if they do get these into the States and let's say, one of them needs a repair, like what do they do? How do they go get certain things fixed on a wing up in the US?
Speaker 2:That's right, great question. So there's really three aspects to service. The first is the automotive part, which is the chassis. So it's built on a RAM promos chassis. So any of our customers will be able to take if it's an automotive related repair to any authorized RAM circuit center that can service, check us The wing. Them always say the port will come with a one year warranty up with the chassis. So really after that instead they'll take it to any authorized RAM service center. But that's where you'll be able to get the automotive part fixed or repair service. So the next is all the appliance right The refrigerator, so the air conditioning. So a wing is using a Libbert which won't know our global companies. Those are the same appliances but in all of the other major OVMs in America And so if something breaks those will come with factory warranties. You'll call you know Libbert and they'll tell you where in your area you can have the appliances fixed. The final part is the wing right. So that's the living module and everything inside a living module that's not appliance related. So that's the drop down bed, the radiating, the floor, the cabinets. So all of our dealer partners will also be authorized wing umber service centers. Initially we're launching with three dealers in the US. When I say initially, i mean like at the day of launch, but very quickly thereafter we're going to have other dealers with with wing service centers as well, but initially they'll be they expect them to be in Texas, pennsylvania, new Jersey, and then California and Florida will follow.
Speaker 1:Yeah, Yeah, Awesome. So yeah, I'm curious a little more about the wing of RV itself. Does it have like? what is the power system like? Is it a plug-in only to stop solar? What can people expect with with the power situation?
Speaker 2:Look it's a very interesting question because the answer to this is something that, or a part of the answer to this question, only wing can sort of talk about. So there's the odds right And a lot of people will ask is this the wing room, something you know? that is corporate for boom dog? And the short answer is absolutely yes. It comes with a 210 watt solar panel. It's a 3000 watt inverter. You can upgrade to two lithium ion batteries. It comes standard with two lead acid batteries that are hooked up to the LE300, which is sort of a lithium hybrid system. But what no other manufacturer can talk about which wing can that I think is really a game changer is and we touched upon this earlier in the conversation is the impact the Monocoque fiberglass one piece shell has on the battery padlock. And you know we talked about again fiberglass does not conduct heat. It's a one piece fiberglass shell. It's the same process that boat rolls on, so there's no seam. So on a hot day or cold day your air is not seeping out, so you're using a lot less power to keep yourself cool. And then the insulation system. You know, when I look at the insulation systems that are put in all of the US models made by all the legacy OEMs. I mean it's like the residential or commercial insulation you get from like Home Depot which is, like you know, it's very thin. When you look at wingums, i mean it's like that thick and it's the density of it as well. So those three aspects of the wing and product are going to require a way less power to the units. To keep yourself comfortable as far as temperature is concerned, which I had to believe and I think a lot of people would agree when you're boondocking probably you know skating AC is what tradition eats up a lot of your power.
Speaker 1:Yeah, for sure, for sure. That sounds like a pretty good solar and inverter system for some boondocking. I mean, that sounds like it'll work well for a while, so that's good to know. Yeah, and another thing people always want to know about RVs is if you could describe what the bathroom situation is like.
Speaker 2:Okay, i hopefully throw up some pictures of the bathrooms in other wings. I don't think you will find any claspy motorhome. Whether you start with our most compact model, they always see 540 to 17 feet, not inches, long. Look at that bathroom. You look at the vanity and the sink and the shower. I don't think you'll find anything that has a bathroom that is comparable as far as luxury and size and function. And then, as you work your way up for larger models the next two models we're launching with in the US, which is the 610 and 699, look at those bathrooms, the luxury in the silence Then, and I will say I actually think it's awesome. Some people prefer the hose system, but all wing models come with the exterior cassette system, which is popular in Europe. It seems like it started to be more adopted and common in the US, but most motorhomes in America have the hose system. The main difference between the two is, with the cassette system you can pull it out and you can wiggle it into any toilet in America and empty. So with the hose system unless you're at a national park or at a campground and if you're to take as full it could be your take You won't have that same problem with a wing. Also, what I think is awesome about a wing is there is room in all of the models to store extra cassettes. So you don't necessarily have to stop and empty the cassette if it's not convenient to write it. Just then in the middle of the night and wake up and use your restroom, realize your tank is full. Just pull out the full cassette and swap it out with the empty one and then deal with the cassette in the morning.
Speaker 1:Yeah, that's amazing. It seems like people do prefer the cassettes that are within that door. I haven't tried that before, but it seems like a really easy way to manage a bathroom system rather than finding a blackwater tank and dealing with a dumpout or a pumpout.
Speaker 2:You know it's funny to be chaste. When my partner and I were talking, we were first thinking about incorporating RVs into compact RVs, into our brick and mortar hospitality concept, and we were novices, right. But to us, like when we saw all of these existing classrooms with the hose system where we just talked to ourselves, how could you ever consider a hose system where you know there's fails and sort of you smell it and see it like it's? we didn't know how you could ever kind of associate that with luxury. And that was one of the things when we discovered William. We're like this is this is so much nicer than experience, right. Well, wheel it into, you know, a, any bathroom, a gas station bathroom, mcdonald's bathroom you can have McDonald's, mcdonald's bathroom or even the bathroom in a hotel lobby, right, and I don't know how you can compare. Sort of a TS feels so much more of an elegant experience versus like the hose and plug it into the ground. So that's my opinion. You know, if somebody feels the hose system is more, more than a little long, and he sure And how about these, these little ones, the Wingham 540,?
Speaker 1:what kind of gas mileage are these getting? Are they typical of just a Ram Pro Master van Like? I forget, those get like 15, you know, 17, or what have you found in terms of the fuel economy?
Speaker 2:Yeah, 18 on the street with 13 on the highway.
Speaker 1:Very good, that's awesome. Yeah, that's pretty typical of these larger class B RVs, for sure. So that's good to know. And yeah, so how about? so, if someone is wanting to buy one of these and import them, can you give them an example of what kind of cost or fees that a Wingham might be?
Speaker 2:Sure, sure, so, and I say this with the disclaimer that prices are subject to change, but right now the price is $125,000. That's sort of the the base model, but the way that we're going to do it is is their base model, the sort of I call it like most C loaded. There's really only a handful of options that are not included, which would be a telnet, a bike rack, a TD and the upgraded to lithium ion batteries. Other than that, they come. They come. Oh, i'm sorry I'll be forgetting one. I'll come back to that if I am. So, other than those add on options, it comes mostly with rent. So it comes with air conditioning, comes with leather. Oh, i'm sorry, i'm microwave. I didn't say microwave, did I? The microwave? That's, that's good. Other than that, it comes with, like I was saying, leather air conditioning. It comes. It comes with rating heat in the floor, that standard, a 200 or 10 watt solar panel standard. And then, other than other than that, the only other additional cost is the shipping costs from Italy to the US. Before the pandemic it was about $2,500 to ship a William Royce 540, actually I should be calling it a William Royce 540.1. That's the upgraded to 0.1 from Italy to the US. Here are the pandemic. It went like like the height of the pandemic and it went 10,000. Now it's come down quite meaningfully, but we won't have that exact price until about a month away from delivering the OAC 540.1s to customers. So right now we're telling the customers to use. So it's $5,000 as a place. It might be a little less, it might be a little more, but that's sort of a price that we think is a good place.
Speaker 1:Right, and that is always going to be subject to change with economy and how the shipping rate, so people just have to know that it's going to change. It's kind of obvious. So I mean I shipped my Sprinter Van across the US to get to me and that was like three grand, so that's not bad for Europe.
Speaker 2:Every time I leave my half of my past at gas station I look up and you know the board there. I'm like, oh, the cross that we're going to meet. I just went dead out of the op.
Speaker 1:I know for sure, cool. So we haven't talked about something that's really exciting that you guys are doing, which is this crowdfunding program. Tell me all about that and how people can get involved in that.
Speaker 2:Thank you, Yeah, thank you for asking. This is something that we're very excited about. So so far we've raised, i want to say, about $2 million in total between what we've raised so far with crowdfunding and we raised about $1 million before crowdfunding And we decided we wanted to raise more money. And you know there's the traditional routes, it's like venture capital or private equity, and you know Wing has this huge crowd. We have a 10,000 person interest list and the fervor, the Wingum is palpable And we thought, you know, wouldn't it be magical to kind of open this up to our fans and our interestals and this huge crowd that loves Wingum, and so they really get part of our journey to now through, you know, to what we hope will be a very successful company in America. And so that was really the impetus for doing crowdfunding as opposed to like the traditional sort of ways of raising capital.
Speaker 1:Cool And crowdfunding for people who might not know is if someone you know gives some money, they get a little piece of the company. That's how that works. Right, right, that's right.
Speaker 2:This is called equity crowdfunding. So when an investor will and, by the way, we are doing our equity crowdfunding campaign on startenginecom, which is like the leading equity crowdfunding site online. So when you go to startenginecom you can choose to set minimum investment of $252, at just a minimum, you can certainly invest more And then when you make that investment you will see equity in our company, which is the distribution company for North America. We are the exclusive third party North American distribution company for Wingum, which is the manufacturer of motorhomes in it.
Speaker 1:Very cool. It's so exciting And you've had so much interest in. I mean, the crowdfunding has only been available for a month or so, right?
Speaker 2:Yeah, just over three weeks and we've raised just over $300,000. And just over three weeks which, according to start and metrics we have our. We've been meeting with them and they've said that you know that, not surprisingly, the response has been you know very, very good that our metrics are very, very good. Clearly there's a lot of interest in you know, being a part of our joint.
Speaker 1:Very cool And of course, i'll add the link to that below in the show notes. People can go check it out and take part in crowdfunding if they would like, or put a reservation down, and so the 540s are coming first And then do you have like a vague or a timeline for the other ones to be imported here? What do you think about that?
Speaker 2:Yeah, yeah. So 540.1s are launching in the US. Expected delivery begin late summer And then, as soon as that sort of gets up and running and the deliveries happen, wingum is going to sort of turn their attention to your 610 and the 690. The 610 is a 20-foot model, the 690 is a 22-foot model, but Wingum expects to start delivering those models to customers in 2024. I would say sort of, you know, probably around late 2024.
Speaker 1:Well, that's a pretty quick timeline and that sounds great and a lot of options for people with the various ring arms, and it's so exciting. I can't wait to see one. And oh, another thing we didn't talk about is the showrooms. What are the showrooms going to be like?
Speaker 2:Yeah, you know, wingum, in our opinion, is the most innovative motorhome to be sold in America And we felt like you've got this extremely innovative motorhome. It's got this very unique and beautiful exterior room And it would just be a disturbance to put Wingum on big RV lots. Usually they're up in the middle of nowhere. One, you know, on a hot day of baiting in the sun, you know you're exposed to all the elements. Two, there's usually, you know, you're sort of bombarded by aggressive salespeople. And then three, you know, i mean, you know we kind of consider Wingum to be like the Ferrari motor. You don't see Ferraris being sold next to Honduras. You know there's a reason why Ferraris are sold in their own sort of jewel box. You know glass retail location And you know we thought to ourselves how are other innovative, aspirational consumer products marketed? You think about Apple, you think about Peloton, about Tesla And what these companies have all done to differentiate themselves from their other. You know other cars and smartphones and actually size equipment is they've gone into. You know high end retail settings and built out those custom showrooms And we want to do the same thing for one, it was because it's important to differentiate Wingum. But two, and most importantly, we feel this isn't right with what we experienced for the custom, right. I mean, where would you rather go? you know shopping for your motorhome? to that big lot that's, you know, an hour away. Wherever you know these aggressive commission salespeople, all of our representatives are going to be there to advise on the product. They're going to be commissioned salespeople And then you know, you can have lunch, you can go shopping, you can see a movie And it's usually in one of these high end malls or you can see people live. So that's certainly nice. So it's really going to create, in our painting, a much more enjoyable experience for us.
Speaker 1:Very cool. Well, this is so awesome And I'm so excited to learn more about the Wingums that we've covered so much in this podcast episode. Is there anything else that we missed and you wanted to share with people?
Speaker 2:You know, i just love to thank you, of course, first and foremost for giving me the time to come on and talk about Wingum And just all of the support and enthusiasm we received from all of our customers, all of everyone who was interested in Wingum. you guys out there have made this experience for our team such a joy and such a privilege to provide something that we feel that you guys are so receptive to. So thank you to everyone out there.
